![]() ![]() As far as a urban, music, crime drama goes Hustle & Flow is an entertaining and well-made one to get into. The content is dead on and this fictional story of a hustler turned actor has a basis in real life as many rappers used to be exactly what DJay is. The content isn't for everyone as there's a lot of demeaning language toward women and what not, but it can't be slandered for its content. He basically is this movie and with it resting on his shoulders, it succeeds. Review Date: Director: Craig Brewer Writer: Craig Brewer Producers: John Singleton, Stephanie Allain Actors: Terrence Howard as DJay Taryn Manning December 23. Howard does a phenomenal job with his dialogue and the accent of the character. Director: Craig Brewer Cast: Terrence Dashon Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning, Taraji P. Especially when the words are coming out of Howard's mouth. The dialogue hits like a hard bass beat the whole film long. ![]() This movie isn't overly original in anything it is doing, but the voice is good. ![]() He meets an old school friend who is now a gospel music producer, and brings him and another producer on to help make DJay's demo tape. To try to improve his life, he begins rapping. He's struggling with life as he enters a mid-life crisis because of a memory of his father dying at the age he is now. The film had a lot going for it, from a natural knowledge of the small time hustlers and dealers to the surprisingly good music and of course there's Terrence Howard in the role that really gave him a name.ĭJay is a smalltime pimp and drug dealer living in Memphis with three of his women and a small child. DJay quickly proves to have a real talent for lyrics, and his first fixed-length song, done at the urging of his friends, appears to have a decent chance of becoming. Hustle & Flow is one of those movies that I didn't want to see end. Key and his sound-mixer friend Shelby (DJ Qualls) help DJay put together several flow songs in which he expresses the frustrations of a small-time hustler struggling to survive. Rating: R (Sex and Drug Content|Pervasive Language|Some Violence)ĭJay: I'm here trying to squeeze a dollar out of a dime, and I ain't even got a cent man. When he hears that a rap superstar is coming to town, Djay works a hustle to gain the rapper's attention and hopefully get signed by a label. When he meets up with an old friend who is now in the recording industry, he's inspired to turn his life around and uses his criminal life as an inspiration to create rap music. Pushing 40, he's tired of the life he's living and dreams of something greater. DJay (Terrence Howard) is a pimp living day to day on the tough streets of Memphis, Tennessee. ![]()
